A less obvious piece of its mission is Episcopal Charities’ support of other faith-based ministries of Christian service. To date, the most visible aspect of this work is the Ezra Community Homes project that resulted in affordable homes being built in Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood for working families.
Today 95 families - some earning as little as $18,000 a year - own their homes. Recent developments that have sprung up around the newly built homes, including other new homes, retail businesses, and a new district police station testify to a neighborhood being transformed.
Episcopal Charities continues to explore new opportunities to be a part of other, even larger community transformation initiatives in northern Illinois.
