A less obvious piece of its mission is Episcopal Charities’ commitment to explore new opportunities to address the unmet social needs of people in the Diocese of Chicago through its New Venture. One such project was Episcopal Charities' support and leadership on behalf of Ezra Community Homes. Through a $1 million interest-free loan as one partner in this ecumenical project, new, safe, and affordable homes were built in Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood for working families.
Today 95 families - some earning as little as $18,000 a year - own an 'Ezra' home. Recent developments that have sprung up around the newly built homes, including other new homes, retail businesses, and a new district police station testify to a neighborhood being transformed.
Episcopal Charities continues to explore new opportunities to be a part of other, even larger community transformation initiatives in northern Illinois.
